contracting

Contracting into your team.

When your team needs experienced change operators, engineers who’ve architected, built and shipped critical systems under real constraint, we embed. Delivery leadership, systems analysis, production accountability. Zero to a fully-fledged system, alongside the engineers you already have.

before the build

Scope, design and the unglamorous work.

Most contract engineers turn up on day one and open the IDE. We do the analysis work first, because in a regulated or business-critical setting, a wrong assumption on day one is a P1 six months later. These are the phases we run before a line of production code gets written.

  1. 01

    Systems analysis

The current estate, mapped end-to-end. Upstream feeds, downstream consumers, the jobs and services in between. What breaks if this changes, who feels it first, and where the hidden dependencies live.

  2. 02

    Requirements & impact assessment

What needs to change and what the acceptance looks like — written down, agreed, versioned. Impact assessed against the surrounding estate so nobody discovers a broken downstream at cutover.

  3. 03

    Mapping, lineage & data quality

Field-level mappings between source and target. Lineage documented so every value on a report can be traced back to where it came from. Data quality profiled before the build starts, not blamed after.

  4. 04

    Target operating model

What the system looks like on the other side. Who runs it, who supports it, what the on-call surface is. TOM signed off before build, not sketched in the last week.

  5. 05

    Traceability & stakeholder translation

Every requirement tied to a component, every component tied to a test. Technical detail translated into the calls Product Owners and senior leaders actually need to make.

how we embed

Four ways this usually looks.

Delivery leadership

Owning a workstream through to production. Setting the pace, unblocking engineers, holding scope and quality, driving the cadence from first sprint to cutover. Accountable for the outcome, not just the commits.

Architecture & systems analysis

Impact assessment, requirements, mapping, lineage, data quality, traceability, target operating models. The unglamorous work that decides whether a programme lands or stalls.

Programme rescue

A live system in trouble, a stalled migration, a critical incident that hasn’t closed. We come in, get to root cause, and stabilise before we leave.

Team lift

Building alongside your existing engineers. Standards, review, 1:1s, mentoring. The team is stronger when we hand back than when we arrived.

track record

The scale we’re used to operating at.

Years shipping software a top-4 UK bank depends on to serve millions of customers every day. Programmes worth tens of millions in delivery, hundreds of millions in business benefit. When we embed into a team, this is the operating tempo we bring with us.

30,000 req/s

12,000 users · 200k+ complaints/year

Recovered a legacy complaints platform back to operational specification after six months of critical service-interrupting incidents. Estate-wide configuration tuning, high-cost code path analysis, API contracts reshaped from “provide-all” to “provide-what’s-required”.

£60M programme

~£500M business benefits at release

Lead engineering role across Loans, Cards, Mortgages and Commercial Credit workstreams of a bank-wide Credit Programme. Multiple feature teams, delivery through to production.

£25M programme

~£200M business benefits

Lead delivery role unifying recoveries across every banking product onto a single platform. Mart design, mappings across three schema generations, 40 decisioning and modelling jobs.

24 hours

CEO-escalated P1, unfamiliar codebase

Resolved a Cards credit-decisioning incident that had stalled an eight-engineer team for six months. Potential to affect ~2,000 daily card decisions with material regulatory exposure.

9,000,000 records

controlled production cutover

Led backdating of nine million EAPI records across live Cards production. Zero incidents, zero defects, no operational disruption.

~£132k / year

saved from a single pipeline

One Apache Beam pipeline optimised from £15k/month to £4k/month — ~73% reduction. Twenty processes owned across a 60+ pipeline estate powering credit modelling and analytics.

capability

Full-stack across the estate.

Not a checklist of buzzwords — the tools we’ve shipped production systems on, at scale, under regulatory obligation.

ideal for

When this fits.

  • CTOs and heads of engineering with a critical programme and no senior engineering headcount to lead it
  • Teams recovering a production system that has tipped into instability
  • Regulated-domain migrations where a wrong cutover has material consequences
  • Businesses embedding AI/ML into a real production workflow, not another prototype
  • Engineering leaders trying to level up their team while still shipping to a deadline

ready to talk

Have a programme that needs senior engineering on it?

A quick chat about what you’re trying to ship and what’s slowing you down. If we can help, we’ll say how. If we can’t, we’ll say who might.
